Heavy Metals in Epsom Salt: Why Testing Matters

10 Feb 2025 · 5 min read · magsulf.com

Magnesium sulphate is made from minerals and industrial raw materials, so trace heavy metals are a natural quality question. For food, feed, pharma and bath grades, they are often the parameters that decide whether a shipment is accepted.

Which metals are checked

The usual list is lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury, sometimes with iron and other metals added by specification. Pharmacopoeia standards and food regulations set maximum limits, and many brands set tighter internal limits.

Which buyers care most

  • Food and pharma — limits set by the relevant pharmacopoeia or food standard.
  • Feed — limits under each country's feed regulations.
  • Bath and body care — consumer-safety expectations and brand claims.
  • Hydroponics — metals can build up in recirculating systems.

How to verify a supplier

Ask for a batch COA that reports heavy metals with the test method and detection limit. For a new supplier, a test by an independent accredited laboratory carries more weight than the producer's own sheet. Repeat testing on early shipments confirms consistency.

Our test results

Our magnesium sulphate was tested by the National Test House, a Government of India laboratory, under report number 25CHB967N. The report recorded 99.8% purity and no detectable lead or arsenic. We share the full report with serious buyers and supply a batch COA with every shipment.
