Industrial Uses of Magnesium Sulphate

5 Aug 2024 · 5 min read · magsulf.com

Away from farms and spas, magnesium sulphate is a quiet workhorse in many industrial processes. Technical grade is specified for consistency, solubility and cost rather than for food or pharma purity.

Textiles and dyeing

Magnesium sulphate is used in textile processing, including as an aid in some dyeing and finishing operations and in fabric weighting. Mills value consistent purity because variation can change shade and finish.

Detergents and cleaning products

It is used as a processing aid and filler in some detergent formulations. Buyers in this segment typically purchase technical-grade powder in large volumes.

Water treatment

Magnesium salts are used in some water-treatment and remineralisation applications. Here, insoluble matter and heavy metals should be controlled.

Drying agent

Anhydrous magnesium sulphate readily absorbs water, so it is widely used as a drying agent for organic solvents in laboratories and chemical plants.

Other uses

  • Leather tanning and processing.
  • Ceramics and refractories.
  • Pulp and paper processing.
  • Construction chemicals and some cement applications.

What industrial buyers specify

Technical buyers usually focus on assay, insoluble matter, iron content, moisture and particle size, plus packing that suits their unloading equipment: 50 kg bags or 1 MT jumbo bags. Share your process specification and we will match a technical grade and crystal size to it.
