Magnesium Sulphate in Animal Feed: What Feed Mills Need to Know
Magnesium is an essential mineral for livestock and poultry. It supports bone formation, nerve and muscle function, and the activity of many enzymes. Feed manufacturers add it through mineral premixes, and magnesium sulphate is one of the sources they use.
Why animals need supplemental magnesium
Forage and grain magnesium levels vary with soil, season and crop. Grazing ruminants are particularly sensitive: lush spring pasture can be low in available magnesium, and low blood magnesium is a recognised metabolic risk in cattle and sheep. Veterinary and nutritionist advice sets the inclusion level for each ration.
Where magnesium sulphate fits
Magnesium sulphate is water soluble, so it can be used in premixes, mineral blocks, liquid feeds and water-delivered supplements. It also supplies sulphur, which ruminants use to make sulphur-containing amino acids. Other magnesium sources, such as magnesium oxide, are also common; nutritionists choose between them on availability, palatability and cost.
Feed-grade specifications to check
- Assay and MgO content — to formulate accurately.
- Heavy metals — lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury within the feed regulations of the importing country.
- Moisture and flowability — free-flowing material mixes evenly in premix plants.
- Particle size — matched to the other premix ingredients to prevent segregation.
Documentation
Feed importers usually ask for a batch Certificate of Analysis, a Safety Data Sheet and, in some markets, product registration or a feed-additive approval. Check your country's requirements before the first order.
We supply feed-grade heptahydrate and monohydrate with batch COAs. Send us your premix specification and we will confirm the matching grade.
